Climate characteristic of May 2019

May of 2019 was warm in the Republic of Belarus. Average air temperature was +14,2°С that is 0,8°С above climate normal.
Positive anomaly of air temperature spread throughout the country with the highest values in Mogilev region (+1,5°С on average across the region) and the least – in Grodno region (+0,2°С on average across the region). 


Deviations of average air temperature of May from climate normal in the Republic of Belarus 

 
Cold weather was observed in 1st decade of May with average temperature that was 2,5°С below climate normal. Average daily temperature was +5 +10°С, frost with the intensity up to -1 -4°С was registered at night hours. Minimum air temperature (-4,1°С) was registered at the meteorological station Lyntupy on May, 4. Then air temperature increased in 2nd and 3rd decades and it was 2,0 and 2,6°С above climate normal respectively. Temperature increased up to +20°С and higher during the day hours, in the warmest days – up to +25°С and higher. Maximum air temperature (+28,7°С) was registered at the meteorological station Gomel on May, 28. Air temperature was +10°С and more at night, in the coolest nights –  +4 +6°С .

79,7 mm of precipitations (135% of climate normal) was registered on average across the country in May. Precipitations fell out uneven throughout the country. Grodno region was the least moistened with 60,1 mm of precipitations or 92% of climate normal. Most of the precipitations was registered in Brest region – 125,1 mm on average or 202% of climate normal. Such amount of precipitations in this region is registered for the first time since 1945. Previous maximum of May precipitations  (115 mm) for Brest region was registered  in 1951.

Amount of precipitations was uneven during all the decades. 1,5-2 decade climate normal of precipitations was in 1st and 2nd decades, shortage of precipitations (85% of climate normal) – in 3rd decades.

Precipitations fell out frequently, with thunderstorms and hail in some areas. Maximum daily amount of precipitations (50,6 mm) was registered in Pinsk, on May, 17. Hail of about 10 mm in diameter was registered in Zhlobin, on May, 11. Wind speed increased up to 19 m/s on certain days.
