Climate characteristic of August 2018

 
Average air temperature in Belarus was +19,6°С in August, 2018 which is 2,3°С above climate normal. Positive anomaly of air temperature spread throughout the country, maximum was in Brest and Grodno regions (+2, 5°С), minimum was in Mogilev region +1,8ºС.

All three decades were above climate normal. First decade were the warmest, average air temperature was +21,6 ºС which is 3,1ºС above normal. The second and third decades were 2,3 ºС and 1,4ºС above climate normal respectively.

The air temperature has been rising +25°С on most days of month, in some days and in some areas – +30°С and higher. Maximum of air temperature (+32,6°С) was registered in Volkovysk and Pinsk on August, 14.
Nights were warm, night temperatures ranged from +11°С to +18°С, temperature dropped to +10ºС and less only in certain nights of second and third decades. Minimum of air temperature  (+2,3°С) was registered in Berezinskiy reserve  on August, 14.
 
The amount of precipitation for August 2018 and the climate normal across the regions and territory of Belarus

This year August was characterized by a deficit of precipitations across the whole territory of Belarus. There were on average 41 mm of precipitations across the country. Minimum was registered in Mogilev region – 21 mm or 32% of climatic normal. First decade was the driest with 5 mm of precipitations (23 % of climatic normal).
Rains were rare, in general torrential, in some areas with thunderstorms and hails (to 10 mm in Oshmyany on August, 3. Heavy rains reached criteria of hazard in certain areas. 54 mm of precipitations fell at least 2 hours in the area of hydrological station Malyie Vikorovichi of Stolin district, Brest region on August 1; 60 mm at least 4,5 hours in the area of hydrological station Lopatino, Pinsk district on the night of 31 July – 1 August; 83 mm at least 7,5 hours – Gomel, 18 August; 65 mm at least 3 hours – Verhnedvinsk. 65 mm of precipitations fell at least 12 hours in Borisov on the night of 26-27 August. Wind has been growing with gust 15-20 m/s in certain areas. Maximum wind speed (20 m/s) was registered in Grodno on August 14. Short-term fogs were observed at night and in the morning.
