Climate characteristic of February 2019

February of 2019 was very warm with average air temperature +0,2°С which is 4,5°С above climate normal. Such warm February or warmer is once every 12 years. In the ordered series of observations, February of this year was 7th since 1945, the warmest February with monthly average air temperature +2,6ºС was in 1990.

Positive anomaly of air temperature spread throughout the country. Greatest deviations of air temperature from climate normal were registered in Vitebsk region (5,1°С), the smallest – in Gomel region (4,1°С). Temperature was erratic in February. In the morning air temperature ranged from - 2°С to +4°С, it dropped up to -5°С in case of cold wave, it increased up to +6 +12°С in the warmest days. Absolute maximum of air temperature (+12,5°С) was registered in Brest on February, 19. Air temperature ranged from low-negative to low-positive values at night, it dropped up to -10-13°С in certain areas in the coldest nights. Absolute minimum of air temperature (-13,5°С) was registered in Minsk on February, 23.
All three decades of February were warm in Belarus: 1st decade was 4,8°С above climate normal, 2nd – 5,7°С above and 3rd – 2,8°С above.

Average amount of precipitations in February was 15,7 mm or 44% of climate normal. Deficit of precipitations was registered throughout the country. Largest amount of precipitations was in Vitebsk region – 22 mm on average across the region (55% of climate normal), the fewest was in Gomel region – 11,9 mm on average across the region (34% of climate normal).

All three decades of February were dry: 41% of climate normal for precipitations fall in the 1st decade, 64% - in the 2nd, 30% - in the 3rd.

Precipitations fall in the form of snow, wet snow and rain. Snow cover lay throughout the Vitebsk and Mogilev regions in February, in Minsk and Gomel regions it lay only in certain areas. Snow cover remained in places on the remain area of Belarus. Moreover, it almost disappeared in Brest region. Depth of snow ranged from 1 cm to 17 cm on the last day of month (Mstislavl meteorological station).
Fogs were registered in certain days as well as glaze-ice and rime depositions. Black frost was registered on particular sections of the road. The force of the wind strength increased up to 15-20 m/s in certain regions. Maximum wind speed (20 m/s) was registered in Slavgorod on February, 21 and in Slutsk on February, 22.
