Climate characteristic of September, 2022

 
The average air temperature in Belarus for September 2022 was +10.4°C, which is 2.3°C below the climatic norm. September of this year was the coldest in the last 20 years.

There was a negative anomaly of air temperature throughout the country, which was mainly in the range from 2.0 to 2.5°C, and in the north of the country the negative deviation reached 3°C. 
In the regional context, the highest values of the negative anomaly of the average monthly air temperature were noted in the Gomel region (2.5°C), in the Grodno region the deviations were the smallest (2.1°C).

The first decade of September 2022 was cold (4°C below the climatic norm) with an average air temperature of +10.5°C. The second and third decades were also cold with a negative anomaly of air temperature equal to 1.6 and 1.3°C, respectively.

The air temperature during the day during the month was mainly +10 +20°C. The maximum value (+21.7°C) air temperature reached the afternoon of September 4 at the Brest station.
The air temperature at night for a month was mostly within +1 +10°C. On the coldest nights, the air temperature dropped to negative values in places. The minimum air temperature was recorded at the Bobruisk station on September 9 and was -3.2°C.
During the month, an average of 67.7 mm of precipitation fell in the republic, which amounted to 125% of the climatic norm. Precipitation spread unevenly across the country. There was an increase in precipitation from the northwest to the southeast from 30 to 270% of the climatic norm, respectively.

By regions, the most precipitation was recorded in the Gomel region – on average 103.4 mm or 200% of the norm. Least of all – on the territory of the Grodno region – 46.0 mm or 81% of the norm.

During the month, the humidification conditions were heterogeneous. During the first decade, there was a significant shortage of precipitation: on average, 3.5 mm or 17% of the climatic norm of precipitation fell across the country. The second decade was characterized by excessive moisture: on average, 47.6 mm or 274% of the climatic norm of precipitation fell across the country, and the highest amount of precipitation fell at the Bragin station – 104.9 mm or 719% of the decadal norm. The third decade was close to normal (16.6 mm or 102% of the norm fell, respectively).

Thunderstorms were observed on separate days during the month, fogs at night and in the morning. On September 23, hail with a diameter of 3 mm was recorded at the Berezino station . During the month, the strengthening of wind speed in gusts of up to 15 m/s and more was noted throughout the country. The maximum wind speed for the month was recorded on September 19 at the Bolshoy Mezhnik station and amounted to 21 m/s.
