Climate characteristic of spring 2021

The average air temperature in the spring of 2021 averaged +6.6°C in the country, which is 0.3°C below the climatic norm.
The below zero air temperature anomaly spread throughout the country, with the exception of the Vitebsk region, where the average monthly air temperature corresponded to the climatic norm. The maximum negative deviations of the average air temperature for the season were noted in the Brest region (on average for the region -0.5°C).

The temperature regime throughout the season was heterogeneous: the average air temperature in March was above normal, April and May were cold.

The average air temperature in Belarus in March 2021 was +1.1°C, which is 0.9°C higher than the climatic norm.
The minimum value of the air temperature in the spring was recorded on March 6 at the Yezerishche station (-17.9°С).
A stable transition of the average daily air temperature through 0°С (the beginning of spring in climatology) in Brest and most of Grodno, in the South and South-East of the Gomel region was carried out two to three weeks earlier than usual (February 20-24), in the North and North-East of the country on March 25, in terms close to usual. In the rest of the country, the transition took place 2-7 days earlier than usual (March 12-14).
The beginning of the growing season (the transition of the average daily air temperature through 5°C towards an increase) in the Southern and Western parts of the country, as well as in the Northeast of the country, was marked on March 25-30, one to two weeks earlier than usual, and in the rest of the country on 10 April, in terms close to usual.
In April, the national average air temperature was 6.5°C, which is 0.8°C below the climatic norm. This and colder April is observed on average throughout the country once every 2-3 years, and the last time in 2017.
On April 29-30, over most of the country's territory, and in the north and North-West on May 5-10, a stable transition of the average daily air temperature through 8°С (the end of the heating period) took place.
In May, the national average air temperature was 12.3°C, which is 1.1°C below the climatic norm. This and colder May is observed on average throughout the country once every 2-4 years, and the last time in 2020.
The maximum air temperature (+28.2°С) for the season was noted at Kostyukovichi station on May 17.
On May 10-27, in most of the territory, there was a transition of the average daily air temperature through +14°С, which is considered the beginning of summer in climatology. In the North-Western part, according to the data on the last day of spring, the transition did not take place.
During the spring, 161 mm of precipitation fell in Belarus, which is 118% of the climatic norm for the season. Most precipitation fell on the territory of the Vitebsk region (on average 180.2 mm in the region (130% of the climatic norm), in the Brest region the amount of precipitation in the spring season was the least on average in the region 140.1 mm (105% of the norm).

The moisture regime was not uniform throughout the season.
On average, 26.7 mm of precipitation fell in Belarus in March, which amounted to 68% of the climatic norm. Precipitation fell in the form of rain, snow and sleet. In the first or second ten days of March, the snow cover continued to collapse across the Vitebsk and Brest regions, while the rest of the country began to break down. On the last day of the month, snow cover was absent everywhere.
In April, an average of 35.7 mm of precipitation fell in Belarus, which amounted to 92% of the climatic norm. At the beginning of the month, for a short time, the formation of a snow cover with a height of 1-7 cm was noted throughout the country.
In May, on average, 98.6 mm of precipitation fell in Belarus, which amounted to 167% of the climatic norm. May of the current year took the fourth place in terms of the amount of precipitation in the ranked series of observations from the wettest to the driest month since 1945.

On some days of spring, in some places there was an increase in wind gusts of 15 m/s and more. The maximum wind speed was recorded on May 6 at Volozhin station (23 m/s). In March, on separate days, snowstorms, icy-rime phenomena were observed in places, and icy roads were observed on the roads. Throughout the season were fogs, thunderstorms, sometimes accompanied by hail.
