Minsk hosts European Mobility Week

In the period from the 16th to 22nd of September, 2021 the EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK is held once again.

Each year the campaign is dedicated to topics related to drawing public attention to the problems of excess road transport, and involves the holding of actions, bicycle parades, conferences and events with the participation of different age groups of the population, aimed at popularizing of urban public passenger transport, environmentally friendly modes of transport , hiking, healthy lifestyle and environmental preservation. This year the theme of the European Mobility Week is “Safe and Healthy with Sustainable Mobility”. This year's theme selection pays tribute to the challenges the world is facing during the Covid-19 pandemic.

European Mobility Week is an international campaign that takes place every year from 16 to 22 September to encourage European countries to implement and promote sustainable transport policies and to invite people to try alternatives to using a car. The final stage of the week is the Car-Free Day, which is held worldwide on the 22nd of September. This is the seventh time Belarus joins this international campaign, which last year united about 3,000 settlements from more than 50 countries. Last year 85 settlements in Belarus, including Minsk, joined the campaign.

This year, within the framework of the week, mobile classes “Car in the city? There is an alternative!”, the preventive alternative activity “Safety Road”, the challenge on Instagram #smart mobility, as well as the campaigns “Cycling to school” and “Cycling to work!”.

In addition, it is planned to hold a dialogue platform on the topic “Use of alternative vehicles to the car. Their safe operation”, an ecological seminar “Mobile electric transport - replacing a car", a cinema lecture for students of educational institutions in Minsk “World Car Free Day” in the “Pioner” cinema, a master class on the technique of cycling tourism, a plogging race on the territory of Minsk and a thematic tour of the Museum of Urban Passenger Transport and Production.

Also, during the European Mobility Week it is planned to open a club of ecotransport lovers and the "VeloSezd" festival in the park of the 60th anniversary of the Great October Revolution.

From the 21th to the 22nd of September Minsk will measure the concentration of pollutants in the air and measure the noise level. Such studies are regularly organized during Mobility Week. The results of the previous years' tests on September, 22 show a positive trend. Every year the difference between noise levels and pollutant concentrations on normal days and on a Car-Free Day becomes more pronounced.

Belhydromet specialists traditionally take the most active part in the campaign. Among the main activities are route surveys of the state of atmospheric air in areas with different anthropogenic load: highways with heavy traffic, recreation and recreation areas. Measurements of air pollution are carried out the day before and directly on the Day without a car. The results are compared with the data obtained on the stationary air monitoring network, taking into account the nature of the meteorological conditions.

The Belhydromet team calls for supporting the environmental campaign and for at least one day abandon the use of road transport, preferring to walk or travel by public transport!
