Due to a precipitation deficit observed over most of the territory of Belarus, soil moisture content is decreasing. Nevertheless, according to the results of instrumental soil moisture measurements across a significant part of the republic (the northern region, many central, eastern, and western areas), sufficient moisture reserves remain in the arable and half-meter soil layers under late agricultural crops. Areas with moisture deficiency are expanding in the southern half of the country. Across almost the entire Gomel region and predominantly in the eastern part of the Brest region, productive moisture reserves in the arable soil layer are low. Certain weather stations in the Gomel region report drying of corn.
The brief rains that fell the day before did not significantly affect soil wetness. According to the latest visual observation data, in most districts of the eastern half and in the southern part of Belarus, the soil at a depth of 10 cm is weakly moistened or dry, which complicates its tillage for sowing winter grain crops and sowing winter rapeseed.
In the coming days, predominantly rainless weather will cause a further decrease in soil moisture reserves. At the same time, the weather conditions will allow maintaining a good pace of harvesting operations.
