Due to a shortfall in precipitation, soil moisture is being lost, particularly in the upper layers. The results of instrumental soil moisture measurements have shown that in many regions of Belarus, reserves of available water for plants have decreased. Nevertheless, over most of the territory, moisture supply for agricultural crops remains good. In some areas in the east of the country, elevated moisture reserves persist. Predominantly in the southern regions, moisture supply on the observed fields is satisfactory. According to data from certain weather stations in the Brest region, soil moisture reserves are low.
Due to rising temperatures, the vegetation of agricultural crops has become more active. The warm weather in recent days has contributed to soil warming. The average soil temperature at a depth of 10 cm has risen to +13-+18°C. This temperature regime is favourable for planting potatoes and sowing heat-loving crops.
In the near future, as rains occur, crop moisture supply will improve. However, due to the uneven distribution of precipitation, a shortage of soil moisture may persist in a number of areas.
