Overview of agrometeorological situation of February 16, 2024
Overwintering of crops takes place under conditions of predominance of thawing weather. According to the latest observation data, there is practically no snow in the fields with wintering crops in the southern half of the republic. In the central part, in the north and northeast of the country, the height of the snow cover reaches 20 cm in places. In some areas in the northern half of the republic, an ice crust is lapped to the soil in the fields.
In a large part of Belarus, the soil is thawed or there is a slight freezing. The soil temperature at the depth of the tillering node of winter crops is close to 0 °C. Under snow cover, at such a soil temperature, plants weaken, as they spend more nutrients on respiration.
In the second half of February, due to the predominance of the elevated temperature regime, the destruction of snow cover and thawing of the soil will continue.
