Overview of agrometeorological situation of January 12, 2021
After the past snowfalls, the height of the snow cover in the fields with winter crops increased significantly. Under the snow, the soil is mostly thawed or there is a slight freezing of the upper layer. Under such conditions, the soil temperature at the depth of the tillering node of winter grain crops is mainly about 0°C and slightly positive. Such a situation provokes an increased consumption of accumulated nutrients by plants and, if kept for a long time in the second half of winter, can lead to weakening of plants.
This week the snow cover on the territory of Belarus will increase and will protect wintering crops from the expected decrease in temperature. Therefore, an increase in frost should not pose a danger to winter crops.
