Climate characteristic of January 2022

The average air temperature in Belarus in January 2022 was -2.1°C, which is 2.0°C higher than the climatic norm. The first month of 2022 was ranked 17th in a ranked observation series from warmest to coldest since 1881.

The positive air temperature anomaly spread throughout the country and was in the range of 0.5-2.5°С, reaching the highest values in the west (2.5°С and more). The smallest positive anomalies were noted in the northeast and amounted to 1.0°C or less.

In the regional context, the largest values of positive deviations of air temperature from the climatic norm were noted in the Brest region (+2.6ºС), in the Vitebsk and Mogilev regions the deviations were the smallest (+1.6ºС).
The average air temperature for three decades of the month was above the norm. The first and third decades were especially warm with positive anomalies of 3.5 and +2.4°C. The average air temperature in the second decade was above the norm by +0.3°C.

The daily air temperature during the month was mainly -6 +3°C, and on the warmest day in most parts of the country it rose to +5°C and above. The air temperature reached its maximum value (+9.9°C) on January 1 at Vysokoye station.
The air temperature at night during the month was mainly in the range of –1 -10°С, and on the coldest nights it dropped to -15°С and lower. The minimum air temperature was recorded at Kostyukovichi station on January 13 and amounted to -23.8°C.
During the month an average of 69.2 mm of precipitation fell in the republic, which amounted to 169% of the climatic norm. For most of the country, 140% of the norm and more fell out.

In the regions, the most precipitation was recorded on the territory of the Mogilev region - an average of 83.1 mm or 213% of the norm for the region. Least of all - in the territory of the Brest region - 52.4 mm or 141% of the norm. At individual points of observation, the amount of precipitation for the month was exceeded by 5% of the security. And at the stations Novogrudok, Mstislavl, Slavgorod, Kostyukovichi and October - historical maximums.

During the month, precipitation fell unevenly. In the first and third decades, excessive moisture was noted (248 and 169% of the norm fell, respectively), in the second decade there was a shortage of precipitation (83% of the norm).

Precipitation fell in the form of rain, snow and sleet. In the first half of the month, the snow cover in most of the territory of Belarus was repeatedly formed and destroyed, in the second half in most of the country the occurrence of snow cover was stable. The height of the snow cover on the last day of the month ranged from 1 cm (Vysokoye, Drogichin) to 38 cm (Mstislavl).
In some places, an increase in wind speed was noted with gusts of up to 15 m/s or more. On January 14-18, an increase in wind speed to 15-20 m/s or more was noted across the territory of Belarus, at some observation points the wind speed reached the criterion of a dangerous phenomenon. The maximum wind speed for the month was recorded on January 14 at Polesskaya station and amounted to 32 m/s. Fogs, blizzards, ice and sleet were observed in some areas, thunderstorms were observed in some places on separate days. A thunderstorm in January is a very rare occurrence and for the period 1945-2020 was noted at 22 stations in Belarus (1-2 days with a thunderstorm were noted), and the largest number of days with this phenomenon was noted in Bragin (3 days) in 1989, 1993, 1997. The last time on the territory of Belarus a thunderstorm in January was registered in 2020 in Minsk.
