Climate characteristic of January, 2023

 
The average air temperature in Belarus in January 2023 was -0.7°C, which is 3.4°C higher than the climatic norm. January 2023 took the 7th place in the ranked series of observations from the warmest to the coldest, since 1881.

The positive air temperature anomaly spread throughout the country and ranged from 2.5 to 4.5°C, reaching the highest values in the southwest (4.5°C or more). The smallest positive anomalies were noted in the north and northeast of the country and amounted to 2.5°C or less.
In the regional context, the highest values of positive deviations of air temperature from the climatic norm were noted in the Brest region (+4.6°C), in the Vitebsk region the deviations were the smallest (+2.7°C).

The average air temperature in three decades of the month was above normal. The third decade was especially warm with a positive anomaly equal to + 4.2°C.

The daytime air temperature at the beginning of the first decade was mostly within +1 +15°C, and in the second half it dropped to -1 -15°C, in the second and third decades the air temperature was mainly -5 +6°C the maximum value (+16.4°C) the air temperature reached January 1 at the station high. Historical highs were exceeded in most parts of the country.
The air temperature at night during the month was mainly in the range of -5 + 5°C, and on the coldest nights in the first decade it dropped to -15 -20°C and below. The minimum air temperature was recorded at the Yezerishche station on January 7 and was -22.5°C.

During the month, an average of 63.5 mm of precipitation fell in the republic, which amounted to 155% of the climatic norm. Precipitation spread unevenly across the country. There was an increase in precipitation from the southeast to the west and northwest from 60-100% to 200% or more of the climatic norm, respectively. Historical monthly precipitation maximums were exceeded at individual observation points. 
By regions, the most precipitation was recorded in the Vitebsk region - on average 80.3 mm or 177% of the norm. Least of all - on the territory of the Gomel region - 34.9 mm or 90% of the norm.

During the month, precipitation fell unevenly. In the first and second decades, excessive moisture was observed (158 and 244% of the norm fell, respectively), in the third decade there was a shortage of precipitation (74% of the norm).

Precipitation fell in the form of snow, sleet and rain. During the month, the snow cover was repeatedly installed for a short time and destroyed. The height of the snow cover on the last day of the month ranged from 0.5 cm (Brest, Pinsk, Polesskaya) to 19 cm (Naroch).
During the month, icy phenomena were observed, fogs were observed at night and in the morning. Snowstorms were observed in some areas at the end of the month. In some places, there was an increase in wind speed with gusts up to 15 m/s or more. The maximum wind speed for the month was recorded at the Dokshitsy station on January 2 and was 20 m/s.
