Climate characteristics of April 2026

The average air temperature in Belarus for April 2026 was +6.4 °C, which is 1.4 °C below the climatic norm. An April as cold as this or colder, occurs in Belarus approximately once every 4 years. The coldest April in the post-war period was in 1955, with an average monthly temperature of +2.5 °C, and the warmest was in April 2000, with a temperature of +10.9 °C.

The negative air temperature anomaly spread across the entire country and was mainly within the range of 1.0 to 1.8 °C. By region, the largest negative deviations of air temperature from the climatic norm were recorded in the Gomel region (1.8 °C), and the smallest in the Vitebsk region (1.1 °C).

The first ten-day period of April was warm, with an average air temperature 1.0 °C above the norm. The average air temperature of the second and third ten-day periods of the month was below the norm. The third ten-day period was particularly cold, with a negative anomaly of 4.6 °C.

Daytime air temperatures exceeded the 10 °C mark on most days of the month, and on some days rose to +15 °C and above. The maximum air temperature for the month was recorded at the Vasilevichi station on April 1, reaching +19.6 °C. Nighttime air temperatures were both negative and positive, generally ranging from -3 to +7 °C. The minimum air temperature for the month was recorded at the Drogichin station on April 29, reaching -5.2 °C.
Over the month, the average precipitation across the republic was 24 mm, which is 61% of the climatic norm. Such dry conditions in April occur approximately once every 6–7 years. The driest April was in 2019, with a monthly total of only 7 mm of precipitation, and the wettest were April 2022 and 2024 (86 mm). A precipitation deficit was recorded over most of the country, except for individual stations in the east.

By region, the least amount of precipitation was recorded in the western regions of the country. In the Grodno region, precipitation amounted to 16 mm, and in the Brest region – 15 mm, or 39% and 40% of the climatic norm, respectively. The Mogilev region did not experience a precipitation deficit; the regional average was 38 mm, or 99% of the norm.

Precipitation fell both as rain and as snow and wet snow, and was locally accompanied by thunderstorms and hail with a diameter of up to 4 mm (Polotsk). Fog was observed on some days. On April 23, an increase in wind speed to 15 m/s or more was noted over almost the entire country. The maximum wind speed (29 m/s) was recorded at the Slavgorod station, which constitutes a hazardous meteorological phenomenon (25 m/s or more).
