Climate characteristics of January 2024

The average air temperature in Belarus in January was -5.1°C, which is 1.0°C below the climatic norm.

The negative air temperature anomaly spread over most of the country, and ranged from -0.2 to -2.2°C, excluding the extreme south-west of the republic, where a slight positive anomaly of 0.4 to 0.6°C was noted.
In the regional context, the greatest negative deviations of air temperature from the climatic norm were noted in the Vitebsk region (-1.8°C), the smallest - in the Brest region (-0.1°C).

The first and second decades of the month were cold with average decadal temperatures 5.3°C and 2.4°C below normal, respectively. The third decade was warm with an average temperature 4.3°C above normal.

The daytime temperature in the first half of the month was mainly in the range of -10 -15° C and below, in the second half of the month it was mainly -3 -9°C, and on the warmest day in the last decade of the month it rose to positive values. The maximum air temperature for the month was recorded at Brest and Vysokoye stations on January 30 and amounted to +6.6°C.
The air temperature at night during the month was mainly in the range from -10 to -15° C, at the beginning of the month it dropped to -20 and below on some days, and on the warmest nights at the end of the month it rose to positive values. The minimum temperature value (-28.7°C) was noted at the Yezerishche station on January, 8.

During the month, an average of 56 mm of precipitation fell in the republic, which amounted to 135% of the climatic norm. Precipitation spread unevenly across the country. There was an increase in precipitation from the north and northeast to the south from 90-100% to 150-200% of the climatic norm, respectively.
By region, the most precipitation was recorded in the Gomel region – an average of 68 mm or 177% of the norm. The smallest is on the territory of the Vitebsk region – 42 mm or 93% of the norm.

Precipitation fell unevenly during the month. In the first and second decades, excessive moisture was noted (120% and 192% of the norm fell, respectively). In the third decade, the amount of precipitation was normal.

Precipitation fell in the form of snow, sleet and rain. The maximum height of the snow cover was observed in the second decade of the month and ranged from 11 cm to 47 cm. The thawing weather established in the third decade contributed to the melting of snow and on the last day of the month the height of the snow cover ranged from less than 0.5 cm (Grodno, Pruzhany) to 32 cm (Novogrudok), there was no snow cover in the extreme south-west of the country.
During the month, icy phenomena were observed throughout the country, fogs in places, and a snowstorm was observed in some areas. In some places there was an increase in wind speed with gusts up to 15 m/s or more. The maximum wind speed for the month was recorded at Mstislavl station on January 11 (20 m/s).
