Climate characteristics of September 2023

The average air temperature in Belarus for September 2023 was +16.2°C, which is 3.5°C higher than the climatic norm. September of this year took the 1st place in the ranked series of observations from the warmest to the coldest, since 1945.

The positive air temperature anomaly spread throughout the country and was mainly in the range of 2.5 to 4.5°C. The smallest positive anomalies were noted in the extreme north of the country and amounted to 2.5°C or less.
In the regional context, the highest values of positive deviations of air temperature from the climatic norm were noted in the Grodno region (+4.3°C on average in the region), in the Mogilev region the deviations were the smallest (+3.0°C).

The average air temperature of all three decades was above normal. The second and third decades turned out to be very hot with a positive anomaly of 3.7 and 5.6°C, respectively.

The daytime temperature during the month was mostly +20 +27°C. The maximum value (+29.2°C) air temperature reached the afternoon of September 13 at the Brest and Pruzhany stations.
The air temperature at night was mostly within +9 +15°C, on some days it dropped to +8 +3°C. The minimum air temperature was recorded at the Yezerishche station on September 26 and was -0.1°C.
During the month, an average of 20.4 mm of precipitation fell in the republic, which amounted to 38% of the climatic norm. September 2023 took the 3rd place in the ranked series of observations from the driest to the wettest, since 1945. At the stations of Yezerishche, Orsha and Bobruisk, the historical monthly minimum of precipitation was updated. In most parts of the country 25-50% of the precipitation norm fell.

According to the regions, the most precipitation was recorded in the Grodno region – on average, 26.6 mm or 47% of the norm in the region. Least of all – on the territory of the Gomel region – 13.5 mm or 26% of the norm.

During all three decades there was a significant shortage of precipitation. In the first decade 1.5 mm of precipitation fell or 7% of the decadal norm. In the second and third decades 10.3 and 8.6 mm fell or 59% and 53% of the norm, respectively.

Thunderstorms were observed on separate days during the month, fogs at night and in the morning. In some places there was an increase in wind speed with gusts up to 15 m/s or more. The maximum wind speed for the month was recorded at the Dokshitsy station on September 1 (18 m/s).
