Information of the hydrometeorological situation in the river basins of the Republic of Belarus, which developed in October 2023

The average air temperature in Belarus for October 2023 was +8.0°C, which is 1.2°C higher than the climatic norm. October of this year took 11th place in the ranked series of observations from the warmest to the coldest, since 1945. In the regional context, the highest values of positive deviations of air temperature from the climatic norm were noted in the Brest region (+2.0°C on average in the region), in the Vitebsk region the deviations were the smallest (+0.3°C). The average air temperature of all three decades was above normal.

During the month, an average of 83.3 mm of precipitation fell in the republic, which amounted to 153% of the climatic norm. In most parts of the country, 100-200% of the climatic norm of precipitation fell. In the regions, the most precipitation was recorded in the Gomel and Vitebsk regions – 174% and 155% of the norm, respectively. Least of all – on the territory of the Brest region – 134% of the norm. In the first decade there was a shortage of precipitation: 13.3 mm or 67% of the norm fell. In the second and third decades, there was an excess of precipitation: 18.4 and 51.7 mm of precipitation fell, or 120% and 272% of the norm.

In the first half of October, the rivers were mainly marked by a decline in water levels and their smooth course, in the second half of the month precipitation caused an increase in water levels on most of the country's rivers, resulting in improved conditions for river transport on the Zapadnaya Dvina near Vitebsk, the Dnieper near Rechitsa, Berezina near Svetlogorsk, Sozh near Krichev and Slavgorod. By the end of the month, unfavorable conditions for navigation persisted on the Neman near Grodno, the Dnieper near Mogilev, Zhlobin and Loev, Berezina near Bobruisk, Sozh near Gomel.

The water content of the rivers was lower than usual for this time of year. The Zapadnaya Dvina and Pripyat turned out to be the most shallow, the water content here was 40% less than normal, and the water content of the Neman, Vilia, Dnieper, Berezina and Sozh was 20-30% less than usual for this time of year.
The average water temperature for October ranged from 7.0°C to 12°C, which is 1-3°C higher than the average long-term values for this time of year.
